2002 National Transportation Week Poster Contest Winners
The winner of the 2002 National Transportation Week (NTW) Poster
Contest was announced by Federal Highway Administrator Mary E. Peters
during a grant award ceremony in Washington, DC on May 13. Ms. Peters
and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta
joined in congratulating Laura Schwartzer, a 5th grade student,
who entered the contest from Hillside Elementary School in New Cumberland,
PA. Laura was presented with a plaque and an enlarged copy of her
artwork which was signed by Administrator Peters and Secretary Mineta.
To celebrate NTW, Secretary Mineta began a week-long bus trip across
the eastern half of the United States with an announcement of $11
million in federal discretionary funds to improve safety and reduce
congestion on the 14th Street bridges connecting Washington, DC
and Virginia.
During this ceremony, Secretary Mineta and Administrator Peters
acknowledged Laura, her parents, brother, sister and teacher. Ms.
Peters encouraged Laura to pursue math and science and said she
would be looking for her in the transportation field in a few years.
